General Questions:

  • We have two convenient locations - one in Avon, CT (111 Simsbury Road, across the street from the Hartford Hospital Wellness Center and HealthTrax), and one in Farmington, CT (244 Main Street, near the Highland Park Market Plaza).

Our offices offer a welcoming and comfortable environment to support your counseling journey.

  • Our therapists have experience with a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, school-related issues, grief, trauma, and life transitions. We offer individual, group, and family counseling to address various needs, specializing in work with children, teens, young adults, and families.

  • Yes, we offer both in-person sessions at both of our locations and telehealth counseling sessions for clients in CT, MA, and NH. Telehealth allows you to attend your session virtually, giving you flexibility and convenience and is often a preferred option for busy college students and working parents.

  • The initial intake appointment is generally about an hour long. We will go over practice policies and procedures, as well as general information about counseling. You will learn about your therapist and their educational background and treatment approach. In addition, you will have an opportunity to talk about yourself, some of the things that you are struggling with at this time, as well as your goals for counseling. The initial intake session will provide you with an opportunity to get to know the therapist and to determine if their style and approach is a good fit for you and/or your child.

  • Regular weekly sessions are typically 45 minutes. Your therapist will work with you to develop a schedule that best supports your goals and needs. We have found that the most effective treatment approach is to schedule a consistent day and time for regular weekly appointments, whenever possible. This provides consistency and predictability in the counseling work. You and your therapist will identify specific goals of counseling and ways to assess clinical progress over time.

  • It’s difficult to predict the length of counseling as each person has unique treatment goals. We focus on teaching skills and strategies to deal with identified issues and ways to better identify and communicate feelings. You and your therapist will review progress on an ongoing basis and will determine together when it is time to meet less frequently (every 2-3 weeks) and when it is time to finish counseling services after treatment goals are met.

Insurance and Payment Related Questions:

  • No, we do not participate in insurance plans. However, you may be able to seek reimbursement from your insurance company by submitting a “superbill” provided by our office. Many clients use out-of-network benefits to help cover the cost of counseling.

Insurance plans vary, so we recommend you contact your insurance company to obtain the most up-to-date information regarding your individual plan and coverage for out-of-network or non-participating provider services prior to the initial session.

  • A superbill is an itemized receipt provided by Farmington Valley Counseling Center that includes all necessary details for insurance reimbursement. If you have out-of-network benefits, you can submit this superbill directly to your insurance provider, who may partially reimburse you based on your plan. Be sure to contact your insurance provider in advance to understand their policies on out-of-network mental health services.

  • Yes, you may use funds from a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) to pay for counseling services. Please check with your FSA or HSA provider to confirm that your plan covers these services. Many clients find this to be a convenient option for covering out-of-pocket costs.

  • We accept various forms of payment, including major credit cards, debit cards, FSA/HSA cards, and personal checks. Payment is due at the time of service.

  • No, Farmington Valley Counseling Center and its therapists do not provide direct support with filing claims. FVCC provides superbills and all of the information necessary for completing claim forms; however, clients are responsible for submitting the claims on their own.

Scheduling Questions:

  • Yes, FVCC sends appointment reminders as a courtesy to help you keep track of your scheduled sessions. These reminders are sent via text message the day before the appointment. You can reply to the message to confirm or cancel the appointment at that time.

  • Our therapists reserve appointment times well in advance and have limited availability. Please make every effort to cancel or reschedule sessions as far in advance as possible. For your convenience, you may cancel your appointment via the automated text reminder. Your therapist will do their best to reschedule your appointment at an alternate time, if possible.

Please note if you no show for a scheduled session or cancel last-minute (less than 24 hours notice) you will be charged for the full session fee and this fee cannot be submitted for insurance reimbursement.
